Macedon, Alexander III (the Great). 336-323 BC. AE 21mm (5.74g), struck at an uncertain mint in Western Asia (Miletos?) ca 323-310 BC. Head of Herakles wearing lion skin right / BASILEWS, bowcase and club, thunderbolt below; countermark: head of roaring lion right.
Sear 6742 var.; Price 2800ff.
VF, dark green smooth patina, minor flatness on obverse (due to countermarking). Wonderful, well-centered coin with an interesting lion countermark. Miletos used the lion as its badge and this coin was probably countermarked there.
